The First Encounter

English translation from the original Bulgarian publication.

At Gallery 103 on Oborishte Street in Sofia, an exhibition of paintings by the young artist Daniel Dinev has been arranged. The Municipal People’s Council is among the initiators of this debut presentation.

Art is rich in its essence, and this presupposes great diversity in the stylistic characteristics of the works of contemporary artists. Part of the younger generation of painters openly demonstrates its fascination with modern art through abstract, fantastic and at times unnatural thinking. Daniel Dinev is among them. In his exhibition he tries to escape from reality, from its dynamics and madness, hiding behind rich color forms and moods and thus influencing our aesthetic perception.

His paintings have no titles, something that makes an impression from the very first encounter. Here seems to lie the young artist’s riddle — to encourage us, the viewers, to seek and discover the past in the present, the earthly in the unreal, the human in the inhuman. It is vivid painting, rich in interplay of colors, lines and sharply cut forms, clear contours and surfaces. Painting that can leave you breathless in the act of perception, yet at the same time remains very delicate. Stillness is absent; it exists within the dynamism of the forms and their construction, in the slight mystery of symbolic elements and in the intriguing structure of the compositions. Everything is refracted through the artist’s own gaze and reason. His technique helps us here: it has not lost its measure, but harmoniously constructs the language of his means of expression.

Colorful, varied and rich in tones and nuances, Daniel Dinev’s exhibition is a pleasant message to many viewers who, I believe, will receive it positively.
